Sconce 3647

Hand-built in porcelain, the form is constructed layer by layer and fired until the glaze fractures and settles into its final state. No two pieces emerge from the kiln identically. Light passes through the ceramic shell, transforming the surface from within.

Polish artist and designer based in New York, Natalia Landowska, works at the boundary of art and design. Trained in architecture, she moved away from normative constraints toward a practice driven by experimentation and material freedom.

She works with porcelain in plaster moulds, adding paper to produce shells of extreme thinness and lightness. Glazes are layered and mixed to create complex, unpredictable surfaces, each piece unique in both form and finish.

Her work questions conventional notions of beauty. Forms are deliberately imperfect; glazes may run or flake, edges fray. In these embraced fragilities, she seeks a subtle harmony between matter, light, and composition.

Light is central: it reveals the translucent zones of the porcelain, animates the textures, and generates a play of shadow and reflection that gives each work an almost organic presence. For Landowska, beauty emerges from strangeness, from imperfection.
