Multi Black string blue leaf

In Multi Black, String Blue Leaf, Thibault Philip sets a deep black membrane against blue string and leaf detailing, a contrast of depth and colour. As with all his lamps, the material is animal intestine reclaimed from the food industry, twisted and layered by hand and held together by its own natural proteins, with no glue or resin. Coloured with ancient textile pigments, the dark surface lets light through only where the membrane is thinnest, and the blue accents stand out against the shadow. It is a striking example of Philip’s practice, in which ancestral craft and contemporary production meet, and it is unique.

French artist and designer Thibault Philip works across sculpture, installation, and research, exploring the relationships between the living world, traditional craft, and contemporary production.

A 2021 graduate of the École européenne supérieure d'art de Bretagne, he has exhibited across Europe, Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Eindhoven, and collaborates with galleries, architects, cultural institutions, and researchers.

At the centre of his practice is a single material: animal intestines. Revisiting preindustrial techniques through by-products of the meat industry, he allows the material's natural proteins to bind as it dries — a process developed with CNRS researchers — and colours it with natural pigments drawn from ancient textile traditions. The result transforms industrial waste into sculptural forms that reveal the fragile beauty of living matter.

His work also engages with the stories that shape our relationship with animals and production: drawing on agricultural myths and traditions, it questions the balance between humanity, animality, and the living world.
