Multi Black

Multi Black is the most graphic and radical work in Thibault Philip’s Multi series. The membrane, animal intestine reclaimed from the food industry, is deeply pigmented with ancient textile pigments, so its translucency appears only where light passes through the thinnest layers. Twisted, layered and assembled by hand, the material needs no glue or resin, because its own natural proteins bind it as it dries. Unlit, the lamp reads as a dark, sculptural mass; lit, it shows the fragility and complexity of living matter. It sits between design and sculpture, and it is unique.

French artist and designer Thibault Philip works across sculpture, installation, and research, exploring the relationships between the living world, traditional craft, and contemporary production.

A 2021 graduate of the École européenne supérieure d'art de Bretagne, he has exhibited across Europe, Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Eindhoven, and collaborates with galleries, architects, cultural institutions, and researchers.

At the centre of his practice is a single material: animal intestines. Revisiting preindustrial techniques through by-products of the meat industry, he allows the material's natural proteins to bind as it dries — a process developed with CNRS researchers — and colours it with natural pigments drawn from ancient textile traditions. The result transforms industrial waste into sculptural forms that reveal the fragile beauty of living matter.

His work also engages with the stories that shape our relationship with animals and production: drawing on agricultural myths and traditions, it questions the balance between humanity, animality, and the living world.
