Globos

Globos (Globes) is one of the most recognisable bodies of work in his practice. Each sphere is made from fine wire knitted by hand, a slow, repetitive technique through which the artist builds the form stitch by stitch until it becomes an almost weightless shell. The result is a volume made mostly of air, both translucent and structured, which catches the light and throws delicate shadows. First shown as installations, including a site-specific version at the Museo Anahuacalli Diego Rivera in Mexico City, Globos can be shown alone or grouped.

Born in Warsaw in 1960, Xawery Wolski has lived and worked in Mexico City for many years. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques in Paris, and at the New York Studio School. His work has been shown at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok and the Museo Anahuacalli Diego Rivera, and his public commissions include the monumental Infinity Chains at the entrance of the Museo Rufino Tamayo.

His practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing and textile, in materials as varied as terracotta, marble, bronze, silk, knitted wire and plant fibres. Drawing on ancestral sculptural traditions and techniques, he reduces form to elementary, almost archaic shapes, and his recent work brings the human body back into an otherwise abstract vocabulary. Time runs through everything he makes: in the slow repetition of knitting and modelling, and in the capacity of matter to outlast us.

Between the remote past and the present, Wolski makes sculptures that question existence, memory and endurance.
